Background: I started tinkering with computers when I was 9 and eventually got online a few years later. Then in junior high school I started getting into linux and bsd variants. I was also introduced to the 2600 magazine at the time and helped found the San Diego 2600 meeting with my friend skalore. In high school, most of my free time was spent coding and diving into security and other unix system administration avenues. During that time, skalore and myself had thought of the need for a Hacker Convention in San Diego, so we decided to start one -- ToorCon. The first year (1999) went very well, and we received a lot of much appreciated help from the San Diego 2600 meeting-goers, and a lot of support from the great speakers.
I eventually managed to graduate a couple years early, thanks to the CHSPE and found myself doing development work for a Fortune 500 company. Then I ended up working for a startup company developing network interactivity applications and managing most of their network operations. I also ended up starting the local San Diego BSD User Group Meeting, because there was an obvious need for one at the time. Then, when the second ToorCon came around in 2000, a lunchtime discussion with friends gave birth to SUIDNet, one of the first fully encrypted irc chat networks. Nearly a year after that, I decided normal corporate life was not for me, and I decided that any work that I do would have to be to meet my personal goals rather than financial goals.
It was then that I went into partnership with a couple other friends to form a security company to provide network auditing, penetration testing, and managed security services to other businesses. Additionally, we formed dachb0den, for development of all of our ideas and projects we wanted to be made public without any company name or influence attached. There were many others in the area that had similar principles that we immediately adopted into the group and who helped us shape it into what it is today.
